ACTIVE EDUCATION
Active Education is SA Foundation’s school-based intervention programme, designed to re-engage vulnerable students through the power of sport, mentorship, and holistic education. Delivered in partnership with schools across Essex, the programme combines physical activity with personal development, helping young people rediscover confidence, focus, and purpose in their learning.
Each six-week cycle blends theory and practical sessions — using sport as a tool to teach teamwork, communication, and resilience. The classroom elements explore themes like self-esteem, behaviour, and goal-setting, while the sporting sessions put those lessons into practice through cooperative games and physical challenges. The result is an alternative learning environment where every young person can succeed on their own terms.
Supporting Students at Risk of Disengagement
Across England, schools are facing rising levels of absence, behavioural challenges, and mental-health needs among students. According to the Department for Education, over 1.7 million pupils (21%) were persistently absent in 2023, and the number of suspensions has reached a record high. In Essex, teachers report that emotional wellbeing and motivation are among the top barriers to pupil engagement.
Many of the young people referred to Active Education are at risk of exclusion, struggling with low confidence, or facing difficult circumstances at home. Traditional classrooms often can’t provide the space, flexibility, or individual support they need. That’s where sport becomes a bridge — reconnecting young people with learning through movement, teamwork, and trust.
How Active Education Makes a Difference
Active Education provides a structured, supportive environment that promotes both physical and emotional growth. Each session splits time between theory and practical activity — linking lessons on behaviour, communication, and respect to the day’s sport. Coaches and mentors model positive attitudes, using sport to teach discipline, patience, and resilience.
The programme also includes a points-and-rewards system that encourages positive behaviour and accountability. Students earn recognition for teamwork, punctuality, attitude, and effort, helping them see the direct results of their actions. Over the six-week course, schools typically report improved attendance, more positive classroom behaviour, and stronger peer relationships.
By the end of each programme, participants show measurable progress in confidence, self-management, and communication — key skills that support not just academic success, but lifelong wellbeing.
