WHERE WE WORK
WANT TO HELP?
WHY WE’RE FOCUSING ON HARLOW & WEST ESSEX
Harlow and the wider West Essex area are home to a vibrant, diverse community of young people, yet too many face barriers to health, confidence, and opportunity.
With one of the highest youth populations in Essex, Harlow also experiences some of the lowest activity levels and growing concerns around mental health. At SA Foundation, we’re working to change that, using sport, mentoring, and creativity to help young people move more, feel better, and build brighter futures.
of residents are physically inactive
Less than 30 minutes of activity per week, one of the highest inactivity rates across Essex.
of young people experience a mental health disorder
The growing pressure on youth wellbeing means early intervention, community sport, and trusted mentors are more vital than ever.
of young people live in areas ranked among the most deprived in Essex
Limited access to structured sport, safe spaces, and role models continues to hold back potential, something SA Foundation is tackling head-on.
WANT TO HELP?
WHY WE’RE CHOOSING SAWBRIDGEWORTH & EAST HERTS
Sawbridgeworth and the wider East Herts area are full of potential, but many young people still face barriers to staying active, connected, and confident. Access to affordable sport and wellbeing opportunities can be limited, especially outside school hours. At SA Foundation, we’re working to change that, creating inclusive programmes that bring people together, boost wellbeing, and build stronger, healthier communities.
of children are physically inactive
Less than half of children in Hertfordshire achieve the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity each day, showing the urgent need for more inclusive, engaging local opportunities.
of less affluent children are inactive
Children from lower-income families are significantly less likely to take part in regular sport or physical activity, highlighting the importance of accessible, community-based programmes.
of people experience poor mental wellbeing
Across East Herts, around one in six children and young people report feeling anxious, isolated, or lacking confidence, with physical activity proven to be one of the best ways to support mental health.

WHY WE’RE CHOOSING ENFIELD, LONDON
We currently deliver programmes in Enfield and are looking to expand our impact across the borough, supporting young people where access to sport, activity, and opportunities is limited. Enfield faces higher levels of inactivity and inequality than many other areas, particularly among children and young people, and there is a clear need for safe, inclusive spaces that promote wellbeing, confidence, and community connection.
of children are physically inactive
Only around 31.8% of children and young people in Enfield currently meet recommended physical activity levels, meaning nearly 7 in 10 are not active enough for good health and wellbeing.
of adults are physically inactive
Enfield has been identified as one of the least physically active boroughs in London, with just 22% of adults achieving daily exercise targets.
of people experience poor mental wellbeing
Around 1 in 10 young people aged 5–16 in Enfield is estimated to have a mental health need, higher than wider averages and underscoring the importance of supportive community programmes
WANT TO HELP?
WHY WE’RE CHOOSING RURAL GHANA
In rural Ghana, opportunity often depends on access, to education, sport, and the right support networks. Communities like Abenta and Adawso, in Ghana’s Eastern Region, are full of talent, energy, and potential, yet many young people face barriers that limit their growth. Limited access to quality education, youth facilities, and health and wellbeing support means dreams can too easily be put on hold.
At SA Foundation, we believe that where you’re born should never determine how far you can go. Our work in rural Ghana builds on partnership and community trust, supporting local coaches, teachers, and young leaders to deliver sustainable, sport-based education and mentoring. Through our Global Games initiative, we’re helping to create safe spaces, train community mentors, and provide essential resources, empowering local people to lead lasting change. By investing in rural Ghana, we’re investing in people, potential, and progress.
of rural Ghanaians live in multidimensional poverty
This means deprivation in health, education, housing, and access to services, factors that restrict opportunity in communities like Abenta and Adawso. This equals around 8 million people
of rural children are not literate
Only 55.2% of rural residents 6+ are literate, compared with 80.6% in urban areas, a gap that directly affects rural communities like Abenta and Adawso
of children under 5, about 1.2 million, are stunted by malnutrition
Rural areas carry the highest rates of child stunting and undernutrition, directly affecting learning, confidence, and long-term wellbeing.
